The Foodbank is run entirely by its trustees and volunteers, and it works because of one simple thing: when a request comes in, somebody goes.
There is no waiting list and no next delivery day. A volunteer takes the call, buys the shopping at a local shop, and gets it to the person the same day — quietly, and wherever they would like it left.
In a place where everybody knows everybody, that discretion matters nearly as much as the food itself. And the weather and the distances up here turn even a short run into a real undertaking.
Nobody is paid. Nobody makes a fuss about it. It simply happens, week in and week out, and it has done for years.
The people, businesses and organisations whose donations pay for all of it are thanked at the foot of our home page.
And Beryl
Beryl has no idea she is a drawing. She turns up on nearly every page of this site — pointing things out, rummaging in the store cupboard, squinting at a use-by date, being firm with you about rice.
She does the job a wall of text never could. She makes the place feel like somebody's kitchen rather than a leaflet, and she makes it easier to ask for help from a website that has a friendly face on it.

How this site was made
This site was rebuilt in September 2026. The design, the code and much of the wording were produced with Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, working to a brief from the Foodbank and revised as we went. Beryl, who pops up all over the site, was drawn with ChatGPT.
Nothing here went up unchecked. The food safety advice follows the Food Standards Agency and the NHS, the recipes are credited to their sources on each page, and every page was read by a person before it was published.
